Let’s say you built a huge mansion in the woods and wanted to have a big party for all your friends. There is only one problem. None of the roads to your new home have been built just yet. With no easy way to find your home, how many of your friends do you think would actually attend your party?
Having a website isn’t that much different from building a mansion in the woods. It may be a beautiful piece of design work, but if no one can find it, what good is it doing?
Think of the last time you did a search on Google or another major search engine. Chances are, you probably visited the site that came up at or near the top of the results. Maybe, you even made a purchase from that site.
What’s also likely, is that you probably did not visit the site listed on the seventh page, let alone make a purchase from it, regardless of if it was a nice website or not.
So, how did one site make it to the top of the rankings, while another site (that might be equally relevant) fall several pages into the search results?
It certainly wasn’t luck. It was the result of a complex algorithm developed to determine the most relevant site for any particular search term, based on a variety of factors, including page content, metadata and links.
We call that SEO, or search engine optimization. When a website is optimized, search engines (like Google) are able to find the site easier for the keywords and terms Internet users type into their search.
With today’s huge reliance on “Googling” something to find an answer, it’s more important than ever that your site is optimized, so that it appears near the top of the rankings. Not doing so could be costing you dozens or even hundreds of new customers that are searching online for exactly what your business provides.
